What is Dekoh?

Dekoh is a rich Internet application platform for the desktop. In simpler terms, its a software program that allows you to share media from your desktop, without uploading it to a website. Dekoh uses Dekoh network, which provides each user with a Dekoh.net address, to facilitate the sharing, but all media always remains on your desktop.

You can use Dekoh to run applications that weve created—Dekoh Photos, Dekoh Music, Dekoh Books, etc.—to organize and share your media. And you can create your own applications, or use applications that others have created, as we grow, because Dekoh is open-source.

What is Dekoh Desktop?

Dekoh Desktop is what we call the software that allows you to share media from your desktop. In technical terms, it allows the running of desktop applications written using web standards like HTML, Javascript, Flash, AJAX, JSP, Servlets etc. These technologies are typically used to write web applications and websites.

What is Dekoh Network?

The Dekoh Network is a new and exciting way to share media. Every Dekoh user gets a dedicated URL at .dekoh.net. Then Dekoh Desktop uses your Dekoh network site to share your applications and content, such as photos and music, with the friends you select—though your media remains on your hard drive. With your Dekoh Network URL, your friends can view what you have shared at the same website every time, from any computer. Note: Only the people you invite can see your stuff. Your Dekoh.net site is not accessible to anyone with whom you havent shared.

What are Dekoh applications?

The applications are the individual software programs that run on Dekoh Desktop, and which you can use to organize and share your media. Current Dekoh applications include Dekoh Photos, Dekoh Music, Dekoh Books, and Dekoh Calendar. Check out the current applications in the Application Gallery.

Note: Dekoh Desktop is an open-source platform, and we have developers outside of Dekoh building applications, which will be made available through the Application Gallery.

Is Dekoh free?

Yes. Dekoh is totally free.

Does Dekoh upload any of my data?

No, Dekoh does not upload or store any data on the Dekoh website or on your Dekoh.net site. Your computer directly serves the share requests. Dekoh may cache this data temporarily, but you should not assume that any data will be available in the cache.

How do I install Dekoh Desktop?

Go to www.dekoh.com and click on Sign Up. You will receive an email with a link to register and download Dekoh Desktop.

How do I start Dekoh Desktop?

You can start Dekoh Desktop in several ways. If you use Windows XP or Vista, you can click on the Dekoh icon on your desktop. If youre a Mac or Unix user, you can go to your Dekoh Network site (yourid.dekoh.net), log in, and click My Desktop. Or you can do the same from the Dekoh.com site.

How do I get new versions of Dekoh Desktop and installed applications?

To install the latest versions of Dekoh applications, click Find updates in your Dekoh Desktop. Dekoh Version Manager will tell you if any updates are available for the applications youve installed. When you update, all media you previously added remains in the application. For example, if you upgrade Dekoh Photos, photos imported into an earlier version will be retained and will continue to be available after the upgrade.

If Dekoh Desktop is running a web server, can anyone connect to my computer directly?

No. The server is bound to a local port, so access from anyone outside is not possible.

Does Dekoh work behind firewall?

Yes. No public IP or opening of ports is needed.

How can I uninstall Dekoh?

Start Dekoh Desktop and click the Shutdown button at the top right corner of your Dekoh Desktop home. On Windows, Run c:\dekoh\server\bin\remove-service.bat. Delete the Dekoh directory. Remove the desktop icon.

On Mac, delete the Dekoh directory. Remove the desktop icon. Linux users will only need to delete the Dekoh directory to uninstall Dekoh.

Future versions will have an uninstall program that will automate these steps for all platforms.

Dekoh Network and Sharing

What can I share?

You can share applications (developers can write their own) and content such as photos, music and music playlists, entries from your book catalogue, and calendar reminders from within Dekoh Applications.

How do I share?

Every Dekoh application has a Share tab. From within Dekoh Photos, Dekoh Music, and Dekoh Books, click the Share tab to share your media.

If youre sharing a non-Dekoh application, click the share icon next to the application link in your Dekoh Desktop. You can add new email addresses or Dekoh User IDs, or select from the existing list and click OK.

When I share with someone, do they have to be a Dekoh User or install Dekoh Desktop to view what I have shared?

No. They don't need to have Dekoh Desktop or even have registered with Dekoh. When you share, your friends get an email link to your Dekoh Network site with a password. They can use their web browser to go to the link address and type the password to view what you have shared.

How does sharing work?

Dekoh Desktop connects to Dekoh Network at startup. All requests accessing shared applications/content come through the Dekoh Network after authentication and validation of each request. Authentication is through login/password, which makes sure that the person accessing is truly the one with whom you shared. Validation makes sure that this authenticated person has (or does not have) access to a particular application/content. That way, you can be completely sure that only the right person accesses what you share.

Can anyone access all my files on my computer?

No. Its not possible for others to directly access files on your computer. Dekoh applications keep only a reference to the actual file when it is imported or added (references are called DIO or Digital Objects). A file that does not have a DIO created in a Dekoh application can never be accessed. Each DIO can be associated with one or more shares. Only those friends who are added to these shares with the DIO as a part can view the file.

In other words, it works the same way that website user accounts work. On Gmail or eBay when you log in, you access only what has been made available to you. Thats what your friends will see when you share with them—only what you have made available to them.

What happens when I shutdown my computer?

After you shut down, your friends cannot access Dekoh applications (and therefore, they cant see what youre sharing). Its like Instant Messenger: When youre not there, your friends cant see you.

How will my friends know when am I online?

Currently this feature is not supported. Future versions may provide this.

Can I share anything I choose to with others?

No. You are expected to adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy, which you accepted when you registered for Dekoh account.
